Interesting Ways to Display Your Favorite Photos

Photos of family and friends add warmth and personality to our homes. The more public the photo display, the more creative you need to be to exhibit your treasures.

Every home has some wall space that can be converted into an attractive photo display. Most people view their photos as priceless memories, so why not display them as works of art…create a gallery to show case your family and friends.

-Decide on what pictures you want to display. The pictures need to be close up and clear otherwise the gallery will not be sharp.

-Create a theme – family vacation or a special holiday. You can update your pictures on a yearly basis…have a photo gallery party each year.

-Mixing frames of different styles and sizes can be fun, but it does take some planning. Find a consistent theme of color or type of wood to balance out the different shapes and styles…the photos need to take center stage, not the frames.

-Lay the framed photos on a tabletop or the floor and rearrange until you find a workable arrangement. Start with the largest pictures first and surround them with smaller photos.

-Find a friend or family member to help when measuring and preparing to mount on the wall. Have your leveler ready to be sure that a picture that looks straight actually is straight.

Other ideas:

Older photographs add character to your home. If you have a favorite old photo that’s fading, or has been damaged or crinkled through the years, take it to a photo shop to have it restored and reprinted. You might even be able to do this yourself at home with photo imaging software. You might want to consider adding a special effect, enlarging or cropping the photo differently to add a new perspective to a familiar photo.

Great places to display your favorite photos on tabletops, desktops, bookshelves, and your family entertainment wall unit. I received a gift of an oak wood dressing screen that contained space for nine large 8×10 photos…what a wonderful display for my children’s pictures.

Transfer a favorite photo onto a pillowcase or wall hanging. Photo collages of friends or family members make great placemats. Simply arrange and laminate.

Individual laminated photos can be affixed to magnets to put on the refrigerator and other metal surfaces in your home.

For the special occasion, create a photo quilt. Photos can be transferred onto fabric easily. The quilt will need to be hand washed, but what a treasure to give someone as a gift.

Finally, for all those special pictures that don’t make the home display, create your own scrapbook and add your stories around the photos.

A Very Slick Photo Gallery WordPress Theme

Without a doubt, the Manhattan theme by StudioPress is a very slick photo gallery WordPress theme.

Why is the Manhattan theme such a slick photo Gallery WordPress theme?

Keep in mind, this is my opinion. I’m not basing this proclamation on any official WordPress theme rating organization. My reasons for liking this gallery WordPress theme so much are twofold:

  1. It has my preferred photo gallery layout on the home page, and
  2. It’s a theme that operates on the Genesis Framework.

My Reasons Explained

1. Photo gallery layout and Design of this theme

The home page is what makes the design so fantastic. I like the large above-the-fold image slide show for featuring your best photographs.

Under the large photo space on the home page you have space to create a gallery. The Manhattan gallery demo features only 4 photos, but you can add many more if you like. You can create a large scrolling gallery of photographs on the home page. This is easily done in the WordPress Widgets panel.

What you do is drag the Featured Posts feature built into the theme on the Genesis Framework and drag it to the home page widget section. The Featured Posts widget pulls your images from the specific posts you place your images. You can also manually insert source image code in the Widgets to display any number of photos.

The point is you can create a huge or small photo gallery on the home page. Those photos can link to a post or not. It’s up to you.

Moreover, because the Manhattan home page is configured with widgets, you can add article titles and/or excerpts as well or in place of photos.

Essentially, you have many options for designing your home page with the Manhattan theme.

2. I like the Genesis Framework

There is much to say about the Genesis Framework.

If you go with the Manhattan theme, you gain the benefits and features of Genesis. That is a fundamental advantage of the Manhattan photo gallery WordPress theme. In other words, Manhattan is not a stand-alone WordPress photo theme. Instead, it’s driven by Genesis which gives you the tools for building a fantastic photo gallery website.

Just so you know, I use the Genesis Framework for many websites, including my offline business website. When Genesis was released, I fairly quickly migrated most of my websites onto Genesis. I’ve been very happy with that decision ever since.

Why pay for a photo gallery theme when there are many free gallery themes available?

Good question. In fact, before I used paid themes, I used free themes as well. I became frustrated with free themes. Then I read something about some free themes being encoded with links and perhaps even poor code. I became a concerned and dug a little deeper.

I wish to emphasize not all free themes are compromised. The trouble for me then was I couldn’t tell whether a free theme was okay or not.

A few words about StudioPress

When you buy a theme from StudioPress (such as Manhattan), you can use it on as many domains as you like. This is important. Some premium themes restrict the number of uses. Not so with StudioPress.

You also have access to a good support forum with senior moderators who know A LOT about WordPress themes and StudioPress themes specifically. They answer questions generally within 24 hours.

How to Create a Photo Gallery Website – The Fast, Friendly, and Free Way to a Custom Photo Website

Move Over Photo Sharing Websites, I’m going Solo

There’s a time and place for community-centered-photo-service-websites for the masses (whew!). But sometimes you need something all your own — you know what I mean?  If you’ve found that it’s time that your photography skills and photos are worthy of a dedicated website of their own, read on to discover one of the most painless ways to create a stunning photo gallery website.   You’ll find that it’s a lot easier than you think!  With a little web programming knowledge and motivation, you can even build your photo website in one day or less, if you really wanted to.

How to Create a Photo Gallery Website In Less Than One Day

Now you don’t have to build your website in one day — I’m just saying it’s possible, if you really, really wanted to (by all means take your time!)

I’ll let you in on a little known secret to the world of building websites.  Most major sites you see on the internet today were not made from scratch.  Rather they are built on top of something called a content management system, or CMS for short.  What that really means is when you set out to build a website, you can install a content management system (most are absolutely free) and then tweak everything to make it look and function the way you want it.  You can use this technique to quickly and easily build your photo gallery website in less than a day without sacrificing anything.

A Content Management System, The Blueprint To Your Photo Website

A CMS is to a website just like a blueprint is to a house — it lays the foundation for the owner to build and customize.

Just like a blueprint for a house, a content management system lays the foundation of your website, but you are free to change, modify, and tweak features within reason.  You will be able to choose what goes where, what colors to use, what features to enable and what to turn off.  Most of the hard work is done for you.  All you have to worry about is the personalized tweaks that you want to make.

Sound interesting? Let’s see dive into the specifics of using a CMS to create your photo gallery website.

Joomla — The General Purpose Content Management System

If you did an internet search for “content management system,” you’ll quickly find that one named Joomla is one of the most popular CMS’s around — if not THE most popular.  There are many reasons why this is so, and here are the highlights:

Joomla is free

Joomla is easy to use, with an easy learning curve

Joomla is compatible with most webhosting companies

Joomla has a wide range of plugins

Joomla has an active community

I’m not here to sell Joomla — it’s free for crying out loud!  If you want to learn more about Joomla and it’s awesomeness just do a little searching.  Meanwhile I’ll outline the steps you need to take in order to use Joomla to create your photo gallery website.

Using Joomla For Your Photo Gallery Website

Here’s a quick run down on how to build a photo gallery website using the Joomla content mangement system

  1. Register a domain name.
  2. Sign up for a web hosting account.  Many sites offer domain registration for free if you sign up for web hosting with them.
  3. Download and install Joomla to your web hosting account.  Some web hosting companies offer an automatic install of Joomla.
  4. Install the RS Gallery Plugin for Joomla.  Installation is a matter of clicking two buttons
  5. Change your Joomla template and remove the example items from your Joomla installation
  6. Start uploading your photos!
